The title reference, Tank Man, is the nickname of an unidentified Chinese man who stood in front of a column of Type 59 tanks leaving Tiananmen Square in Beijing on June 5, 1989, the day after the Chinese government's violent crackdown on the Tiananmen protests.

This installation is a tribute to the bravery of people who have stood up to Power throughout history. The works portray, with white chalk on blackboard, dissidents, activists, and political prisoners from around the world who have stood up to totalitarianism, political and economic power, or the preconceived ideas of the cultural or religious establishment, sometimes risking their own lives. These women and men are often unknown or silenced, but their courage and personal sacrifice have undoubtedly been a fundamental factor in advancing democracy and human rights in the world.
